Interview Advice

Succeeding at the interview stage relies on a number of key factors. Your skills and experience will be important – but companies will also judge how you relate to other people, whether you’ll be a ‘good colleague’ and fit into the culture of their organisation.

Follow these tips and you should improve your interview skills:

  • Do your research before the interview by looking at the company’s web site. The interviewers may be impressed if you show an interest and knowledge of their business.
  • Plan your journey so you arrive in good time at the interview (see our journey planner). Take a mobile phone with you (and the company’s phone number) in case you get delayed.
  • Dress smartly in business clothes (unless directed otherwise). First impressions will count.
  • When greeting your interviewers, offer a firm handshake, smile and maintain eye contact.
  • During the interview, smile and keep eye contact with your interviewers. Talk clearly. Avoid slouching or leaning back in the chair.
  • Listen carefully to the questions asked. Don’t be afraid to ask if they can repeat a question if you’re not quite sure what they mean – or ask politely if they can clarify what they mean.
  • Help to build a rapport with your interviewers. Keep the conversation flowing smoothly and don’t interrupt anyone. Also, avoid single-word answers and be ready to explain more.
  • If you are asked technical questions that you do not understand, be honest. But explain where your technical skills reside – and that you are keen to develop your technical knowledge.
  • Look back at the CV that was submitted for you. Be ready to explain about any jobs, roles or skills that are mentioned in the CV.
  • Bring any useful documents with you, such as company awards, certificates or qualifications. You may not need them. But it could be useful to mention you have them with you – in case the interviewer wants to take a look.
  • Have a few questions you’d like to ask them – and not simply about pay and conditions. Perhaps it’s about their business challenges and the core skills they’re looking for?
  • Try to relax. Even confident people get nervous at interviews. But feel good about yourself and believe in yourself. After all, the company decided to place you on their short-list. They clearly think you’re good enough to be interviewed … you’re a step closer to getting the job already.
